Summary/Abstract: The violin is an extremely popular classical bowed instrument. The path of its development in China has been long, difficult and eventful. The present article aims to consider chronologically the process of the violin's emergence and entry into China's musical culture up to 1919 in three aspects: its appearance in the Chinese imperial court; its spread through religious schools and missionaries; and its entry into Chinese society and the daily life of the Chinese people. In the course of the exposition, the forms and differences between the different stages of the violin's development in China are analysed in the context of the historical, political and social changes.
