Summary/Abstract: The original opera was not for all classes, and it was not as good as what we now call ‘elegant art’, but a pure aristocratic way of entertainment. As Cristoforo Ivanovich, a baroque priest and music historian, said when commenting on Venice Opera: ‘In the theater dominated by the noble court, the preferences of the noble decide everything, where (opera art) is just a commercial transaction.’
