Summary/Abstract: The article takes a closer look at Archbishop Joseph Bilczewski’s(1860–1923)teaching on a self-education as a path to holiness, containedin his pastoral letter entitled “Character.” The author shows the differencebetween Christian character and ordinary (“natural”) character. The formation of Christian character involves learning moral norms, working ononeself and being open to grace (God’s help). The result is virtues (faith,hope, love, prudence, justice, fortitude, temperance), which strengthenreason, will and feelings, making righteous action—easy
