John Stuart Mill and Isaiah Berlin’s concept of liberty

Summary/Abstract: The topic of this article is a comparison of the idea of liberty as presented by John Stuart Mill and Isaiah Berlin. After a preliminary review of the biographical outline of the authors of the concepts discussed, thegenesis of John Stuart Mill’s concept of liberty is presented based onhistorical facts. The theoretical basis of this concept of liberty—empiricism—and its ethical sources—utilitarianism are outlined. Then, Mill’sconcept of liberty is discussed, the explanation of which is supported byexamples of the application of the discussed concept in practice.Then, the genesis of Isaiah Berlin’s concept of liberty is outlined. Itstheoretical foundations are described—empiricism, and its ethicalfoundations are indicated—pluralism of values and goals on which thisconcept of liberty is based. The content of Berlin’s concept of liberty ispresented, the explanation of which is also supported by numerousexamples. Within Berlin’s concept of liberty, two ways of understanding this idea are distinguished: positive liberty and negative liberty, aswell as Berlin’s criticism of positive liberty.At the end, the discussed concepts of liberty are analyzed and theauthor’s assessment of the relationship between the discussed concepts is presented, based on the previously performed comparativeanalysis, along with the possible contemporary application of the discussed concepts of liberty in practice. Final conclusions are presented, derived from the main content of the article, which demonstratebroad compliance between both liberalisms.
