Summary/Abstract: The author analyzes female heroines from two early works by Wacław Berent: The Teacher and On Sunday. Zosia and Józka contain a whole range of contradictions in their character and manner – they are both shy and self-confident, modest and seductive, but above all they are the ones who organize the entire reality for their husbands. Men, on the other hand, although physically strong, seem to be completely defenseless when it comes to feelings and love relationships with their partners. In the features of Zosia and Józka, the writer enchanted the attributes and images of women that appear on the pages of his subsequent works: The Professional, Touchwood and Winter Corn.
