Summary/Abstract: Inspired by the Dunhuang murals, composer Tang Dong created China‘s first „opera based on murals“: „Buddha Passion”, which combines belcanto, authentic folk singing, opera-type arias, recitative, ensemble, chorus, symphonic music, Buddhist music and dance. All these make „Buddha Passion” one of the most original and diverse Chinese performances in recent years, with very serious research value and artistic significance. This article explores the religious music and Buddhist philosophy in „Buddha Passion”, analyzing the elements of plot, arias, chorus and instrumental music.
