Summary/Abstract: Subject of the work are beliefs and customs accompanying the birth from the moment a woman feels the first sign of “appearance” of new life, till 40 days after delivery. Consulting corresponding literature and using a method of an interview, gathered material has been analyzed in phases, which, to some extent, has followed the biological course of birth. The section dealing with ritual practice that affects the fertility of marriage, introduces others divided in a period of pregnancy, delivery, and a period covering 40 days after the birth. For each phase religious-magical and social elements have been given. Territorial frame of reference of the subject is Zeta region, i.e. a plane area, the centre of which is 12 kilometres away from Titograd, stretching to Skadar Lake. During the field research, six villages have been treated. As to the time interval, the subject covers a period from the beginning of this century up to the present day. Through the survey of beliefs and ritual practice of local population, changes of time past in relation to time present have been examined. The large portion of beliefs has lost its former meaning within young generation, but, at the same time, rich contents of religious practice have been preserved to the present days. Changes took place in 60’s, and were generated by changes in way of life, i.e. by “opening up” of the region to the republic centres.
