Summary/Abstract: In this study, we examined how networks of informers and spies could expand their networks of information gathering as the eighteenth century progressed. Intelligence became an increasingly valuable tool, not only for combating criminal activity and anti-religious behaviour, but also for identifying possible weaknesses and vulnerabilities. We discussed an aspect of intelligence gathering, in which Casanova engaged in numerous intelligence activities for a foreign country, for the request of Louis XV’s foreign minister, in order to provide his employer with a surplus of information after his return from Dunkirk. At the same time, we also examined the impact of the information collected about Casanova by one of the spies of the Venetian Inquisition.
