Summary/Abstract: The article concerns the possibility of using several selected tools of ethnolinguistics in research on legal texts. The proposed method is to enable determination of society’s values that are encoded in such texts. A normative act creates a legal-textual image of the world, i.e. a set of judgments relating to the norms and rules of conduct in a given society that are anthropocentric in nature, as seen from the perspective of the legislator. The interpretation of legally significant concepts which are found in legal texts can be determined by formulating a legal-cognitive definition that includes the characteristics of a certain concept and rules of conduct related to it. Deonticity, i.e. obligations, prohibitions and permissions referring to the concept, resulting from the function of thelegal text is the basic aspect of such a definition. It comprises also legal-linguisticstereotypes, which reflect the conventional image of a subject in the legal text. Thesestereotypes are images, patterns and ideological ideas, which may also co-occur with eachother. The content of legal-linguistic stereotypes is determined through a comprehensiveanalysis of a normative act, considering all types of legal provisions concerning a givenconcept.
