The problem of the date of Vegetius in the work of Michael B. Charles (2007) and the scholarship of the following years

Summary/Abstract: This paper provides an overview on the studies concerning the date of Vegetius in four parts. The first one is a detailed discussion of Charles’ book. Second, its reviews are examined for further arguments. Third, the scholarship of the following years is collected. Fourth, Maier’s studies on the “Palastkaisertum” are investigated as a possible way for a better contextualisation of Vegetius.
