Summary/Abstract: This research examines the European Language Portfolio (ELP) in English and French through a comparative study of its guidelines as a support for assisting students in introducing it in their English and French learning. The beneficiary target group consists of first-year Romanian students who study International Business and Economics and who are learning French and English as foreign languages. We focus on the activities we put into practice during English and French classes for students to be aware of the ELP functions and its benefits for their learning proficiency. We also investigate students' ability to handle academic research techniques in self-assessment and learning. The study concludes that students’ understanding of the ELP could help them to better reflect on their written skills in English and French as to become more proficient in these two languages. Accordingly, students need a well-organized guidance to develop research skills. The suggestions and implications for further study are also discussed.
