Summary/Abstract: An event of great importance and immense impact not only at the social, political and economical level but also on cultural life took place in Spain between 1936 and 1939 – and this was the Spanish Civil War. It will touch upon the conditions of precarious development in the world of arts, affecting the artists who had started building their carreers in cultural domains in the 1927s. These artists shared the same ideals of cultural evolution to such an extent that they constituted an entire generation that alternated between concepts of tradition and means of modernising their artistic language. This attitude finally embraces diverse stands that go towards assimilation or intellectual detachment. The determination and creative force of this group of Spanish intellectuals will initiate and promote new artistic tendencies, and will establish their group as the precursor of avangardism.
