Summary/Abstract: Critics have questioned Tudor Arghezi’s religious beliefs in what emerged as a controversy surrounding his Psalms, in an attempt to call into question his legitimacy to approach the word of God, in a sense to become a psalmist himself. To delegitimize Arghezi is, however, premature and a hasted conclusion. His conversion into psalmist, before judging it as an impiety, as some may be tempted to, is a mere attempt from his part to reconcile himself with his past, on the one hand and with where he stands before God, on the other. Doubt, even denial, have played a part in his life, as it sometimes plays in ours and playing the part of Doubting Thomas is proof of his inner struggle with regards to his faith.
