Summary/Abstract: Ovidiu Bîrlea’s preoccupation with the aesthetic value of folklore is a constant of his entire work, both scientific and literary. In his opinion, the simplicity, naturalness, sincerity of emotions conveyed by the popular creator are qualities that the classic literature has not yet matched. The work Folkloric poetics (1979) synthesizes his conceptions about the taste for beauty of the peasant and is a detailed analysis of the various ways in which this taste is manifested in folkloric creation. The research and conclusions of Bîrlea can be considered a proof of the maturity that Romanian folkloristics reached in the second half of the 20th century. The central idea of this research is that the folkloric beauty cannot be understood and appreciated according to the criteria of the classic literature, therefore, it should be approached not by the literary critic, but by the folklorist.
