Summary/Abstract: Artisanal apprentices acquire craft knowledge through direct observation, often against the wishes of their masters. A brief comparison of normative apprenticeship interaction between Greek and Thai cases reveals cultural differences that potentially influence the mode and result of knowledge transmission. This paper suggests both a consideration of how such insights might affect the interpretation of artifacts recovered from archaeological excavations and, at the same time, the style and aesthetics of the textual production describing such connections and their social contexts. A more artisanal approach to academic writing would offer not only an interesting set of insights into the transmission of craft techniques but also the chance to interest a larger public in academic research.
