Summary/Abstract: The following article aims to show the similarities and differences between theviews of Hans-Georg Gadamer and Paul Ricoeur on the issue of language. The first levelon which both philosophers are compared is their philosophical starting point – Gadam-er’s is an attempt to overcome the instrumental vision of language, while Ricoeur’s is anattempt to overcome certain limitations of structuralism. The second level of the analyzedissue concerns the issue of the relationship of language to the world (Gadamer), also re-ferred to as reference (Ricoeur). Finally, the views of both philosophers on the dialogic na-ture of language, i.e. on the fact that the intention of some statements is to be understoodby another person, are compared.
