Summary/Abstract: The article is devoted to the analysis of the all-Russian word сон ‘sleep, dream’ in Arkhangelsk dialects. The meanings of the word do not differ from those presented in the literary language. Nevertheless, its semantics still differs from literary ones. The compatibility of the word dream and its derivatives indicate the diversity of ideas associated with sleep in folk culture. Sleep in Arkhangelsk dialects is associated with the space of death, with newborn children, with fortune telling and predictions of the future. The dream appears both as a personified entity and as a kind of space into which the dead go forever, where children and adults draw strength and health. The heart or soul of a person plunges into sleep, sleep can be thought of as given by God, sleep can be taken away or returned by forces hostile to man. The diverse combinability of the lexeme сон ‘sleep, dream’ speaks of the importance of this cultural concept.
