Summary/Abstract: The aim of this work appears to be a critical commentary on the certain conception about the specific "aesthetic" views of Thomas Aquinas, that Umberto Eco represents in his research "Art and beauty in the Middle Ages". The critic concentrates on the especially on the Eco's interpretation of the conception of Thomas of the beautiful as an independent "aesthetic theory" an as "aesthetic" view at all. The whole critic lies on the understanding of the contemporary philosophical discipline aesthetics and its terms. The work examines three elements of Eco's argumentation: 1.) commentary on the three qualities of the beautiful, that Thomas gives; 2.) a try to be disproved the thesis, that Thomas defines the beautiful as an individual transcendentia; 3.) commentary on the main view of U. Eco on the medieval "aesthetics". At the end there is an examination of the real contribution that Thomas gives to formation of the aesthetics, that could be found in the surmounting of the "universal aesthetics", as Eco calls it.
