Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to summarize and reflect the different conceptions ofconcession across modern Czech grammars. Grammars have been shown to coincidein some respects (e.g. the existence of different types of concession) and to diverge insome points (e.g. the non/existence of concessive adverbs). The main contribution ofthe study is seen in the proposal of a more general definition of concession. Weconsider it to be an onomasiological, semantic-logical ternary relationship, which isequally based on a causal and adversative relation, that is the reason for its asymmetryand inherently polyphonic nature. The concession is always interpreted subjectivelyand can be captured by means of “concessive triangle”.
