Summary/Abstract: In Burgenland, located in eastern Austria, there are three indigenous minorities recognized by the state: the Hungarian, Croatian, and Roma ethnic groups. Each of these ethnic groups has its fiction, nevertheless, they are little known to the general public since they are insignificant and thematically quite specific. At the same time, the German-language literature of the region, which reaches a much wider audience, often presents and thematizes these ethnic groups, their culture, and their language. The study compares four novels in which the Burgenland Hungarian or Croatian ethnic groups are featured. This makes visible the various literary representations, treatment of clichés, and the images of the two ethnic groups in the majority society.
