Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the issue of vetting in Central European countries after the fall of communism. It presents how Poland, Hungary and Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic and Slovakia) tried to deal with this very important problem and settle with the past. The paper shows the eventual solutions which led to the adoption of the vetting laws. These are discussed in chronological order. First, Czechoslovakia is considered, as it was the first country which adopted a law on vetting. Then the paper briefly presents the fate of this act in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Later the vetting that took place in Hungary is described. In the last section, the paper deals with the problem of vetting in Poland. The author devoted more attention to the issue as it is the main topic of the article. It also shows the different nature of the lustration laws adopted in various countries. the similarities and differences in these acts are presented here. Despite the fact that many years have passed since the fall of communism, the problem of dealing with the past of former officerscha and employees of the apparatus of repression is still significant as it affects the politics and functioning of the post-communist countries.
