Summary/Abstract: The terms sustainable development, sustainability, and environmental awareness are well-known and widely used terms nowadays. The original meaning of sustainable development formulated by the UN in 1987 and the theoretical models based on it have been rewritten in many cases up to the present day. The history of sustainability began with the development of the concept of environmental protection. Alongside the continuous development, the term sustainable development was coined, which was a precondition for a complex understanding of the environment and a holistic approach to health, which was followed by the concept of sustainable health. The publication tries to follow the process of the formation and development of concepts, perceptions, and models built around sustainability. The study aims to interpret the fundamental essence of sustainable development on a theoretical level as the most accepted direction of development nowadays. The work wishes to present the roots that determine the theories related to sustainable development and the social activities connected to them.
