The Indirect Influence of the Romanian Language and Semantic Interference in the Use of the Hungarian Language by Speakers from the Transylvanian Plain

Summary/Abstract: The study is based on a sociolinguistic survey conducted in the Hungarian language of the Transylvanian Plain in 14 villages with 60 bilingual respondents. The analysis of the unstructured interviews shows that the influence of the Romanian language, in addition to the direct influences described in the literature, also manifests itself indirectly through the creation of lexical and grammatical calques. The interpretation of semantic interference phenomena presents in detail a less studied and analysed phenomenon: the restructuring of polysemantic relations of some Hungarian verbs following the influence of Romanian equivalent verbs. This complex contact manifests itself in a systematic way in the speech of several bilinguals from different villages. The issues analysed can be generalised to a certain extent, and show us some aspects of how the bilingual mental lexicon works.
