How do primary education students understand the genre features of fairy tales?

Summary/Abstract: The aim of the paper is to examine the knowledge of students of primary pedagogy about the features of the fairy tale genre and their skills in applying knowledge of these factual features tothe understanding of a specific text, White Lily from the book Auto z pralesa by Daisy Mrázková. In the first part, theoretical background is provided focusing on the genre, psychological research into fairy tales and factual features of the concept are derived. In the second part, research goals and questions are formulated and the sample and the method used (content analysis) are characterized. In the third part, a teaching plan focused on understanding the factual features of a fairy taleis described, in which a three-phase learning model and selected Reading and Writing for Critical Thinking (RWCT) methods are applied. Next, an interpretive analysis of the selected text is presented, which is structured according to defined levels and corresponding genre features. Finally, the students’ answers are analyzed, from which it is evident that the students were able to reveal many factual features of the fairy tale; however, they struggled with the meanings of individual factual features and their function. It was also difficult for them to find the relationships between features and to categorize them. The students found it difficult to detect the symbolic meaning of motifs, which is related to their limited knowledge and inclination to concrete thinking. Based on these findings, the ability to identify factual features of genres and to consider their function and meaning is to be strengthened in the teaching of primary education students.
