Summary/Abstract: The paper compares articles from Nový Čas, Pravda, and SME (the major daily newspapers in Slovakia) to discover to what extent they can stimulate readers’ interpretative competency and participate in its cultivation as a prerequisite for enriching readers’ language worlds. A qualitative analysis of texts is based on the socio-cognitive approach in Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), which focuses on the speech cues used by authors in texts to influence readers’ perception of information. The paper indicates that the level to which a newspaper may stimulate the interpretive competence of readers is determined by the area that communication covers and its comprehensibility for recipients on the one hand, and the viability of the interpretative competency of a specific recipienton the other hand.
