Summary/Abstract: Until recently the historical research had only a superficial knowledge of the inquisitio malefactorum, essentially a possible form of the criminal procedure in the late Middle Ages and early modern times. However, by publishing the protocolla of the inquisitors of sedes Sepsi (1679–1701) and of the data from the related archival research, future research will have far more data than before to unfold the history of this legal institution more accurately. We are firmly convinced that the protocols, as a widely exploitable group of sources, will also contribute to the development of the legal and social history studies, of the family and local history research, and will also provide exciting contributions to ethnography as well. The source is particularly useful for legal researches, since, as with other legislative records, it may provide an opportunity to examine legal issues that would be impossible to study from other sources.
