Summary/Abstract: WWII brought several changes in the status of minorities. The system of judicial protection established by the League of Nations, de facto ceased to exist together with this organization. The Balkan countries which were unsatisfied with the boundaries defined at the end of WWI, considered the beginning of WWII as an opportunity to vindicate the territorial and ethnic "injustices", making the latter a complex war. Minorities with or without their will were involved in these conflicts. Above all, they were faced with the dilemma of their identities. Should they give more importance to their national or resident identity? This issue was conditioned by several factors, namely, the government's attitude towards minorities during the interwar period, the policy followed by the invaders and the attitude of their native countries.
