Summary/Abstract: After providing an overview of the housing conditions of people aged 65 and over in mainland France using population census data, this article adopts a qualitative approach to examine the representations and practices of people who choose to grow old in their own homes. Against the backdrop of an inevitably aging population, a significant proportion of the elderly, often with deep territorial roots, are intent on remaining at home. This article sheds light on the main determinants that enable people to do so: mobility, accessibility, sociability and solidarity.
