Summary/Abstract: In the early 2000s, the Hungarian Company of the People’s Theatre in Subotica earned considerable professional recognitions. However, this was not taken into account by the town council, which instructed the theatre’s general manager at the end of April 2006 not to renew the contract made with the then company director, Frigyes Kovács. The town councillors made a proposal for a new company director, but this was unanimously rejected by the company. When Frigyes Kovács put Bulgakov’s Molière on the program, there was not even a hint of the storm brewing. Ironically—and perhaps as the secret of political gamesmanship—the premiere of The Cabal of Hypocrites (Molière’s story by Bulgakov) resonated eerily with the present in Subotica at that time. Life and imagination coincided.
