Summary/Abstract: The International Conference 'Preserving Memory: Holocaust Monuments and Memorials in Central Europe,' was held at Prague's Academic Conference Centre in October 2023. This event marked the beginning of a five-year project funded by the Czech Ministry of Culture's NAKI III programme, led by Eva Janáčová. The conference included contributions from scholars across Central Europe and beyond, focusing on the broader context of Holocaust memorials, their creation, and the memorialization of specific sites. Presentations covered topics such as the Pinkas Synagogue, cemeteries in Terezín, and various memorial projects in Hungary and Poland. The second day featured discussions on the limits of Holocaust memorials, with examples from Berlin, Mauthausen, and Warsaw. The conference concluded with presentations on memorials to Roma victims of the Holocaust in Berlin-Marzahn and the Czech Republic. The event highlighted the importance of historical and art-historical perspectives in understanding Holocaust memorials.
