Summary/Abstract: 80 years ago, on the night of June 5/6, 1944, the first commandos of Alliedspecial units were dropped into France, thus beginning the largest landing operation ofthe World War II period under the code name “Overlord.” The main task of thecommandos was to delay the movement of German units to Normandy in order to blockthe landing of Allied units and prevent them from reaching readiness to launch anoffensive. The commandos' activities focused primarily on destroying communicationlines, power grids and attacking the supply lines of German units by carrying outambushes and conducting sabotage operations. The commandos also organizedairdrops of armaments and equipment for subunits of the French Resistance withwhom operations were jointly conducted against the common enemy. The purpose ofthe article is to explain the concept of the use of special forces and show their efforts insupport of conventional units landing on the beaches of Normandy
