Summary/Abstract: The 14th-century debate regarding the knowledge of God – initially carried out by Saint Gregory Palamas and the scholar Barlaam of Calabria, and then with the direct or indirect supporters of the Calabrian scholar, known as the hesychast controversy – culminated in the convening of a synod in 1341, which condemned Barlaam's teachings and writings. However, the dispute continued for a period of time, leading to the convening of two more synods, in 1347 and 1351, to confirm the orthodoxy of Palamas' teachings and to definitively eliminate traces of heresy.
