Summary/Abstract: From a spiritual perspective, the heart is the altar of our soul; it is the place where the Holy Spirit comes to dwell. God makes His abode only in those with a pure heart; therefore, we must thoroughly cleanse our hearts of all evil passions. The Holy Fathers unanimously identify the diseases of the heart as follows: ignorance, forgetfulness of God, a hardened and calloused heart, a blind and soiled heart, coarseness or ungraciousness, the love of pleasure, recklessness, and iniquity. Each of these impediments prevents the professing Christian from perceiving and listening to their Creator, leading them to turn away from the Lord. On the other hand, repentance, meekness, sorrow or contrition of the heart, sincere tears, and warmth of heart for God are the methods that the Holy Fathers have prescribed to combat these spiritual maladies. This spiritual medicine aims to deliver one’s heart from the abyss of sin. In the endeavour to lead a sanctified life, a person must taste from each remedy without neglecting any of them. This is the only way to free the heart from surging desires and dedicate it entirely to God.
