Summary/Abstract: This is a broad panorama over the congresses of Byzantine studies, the main emphasis being on the first congress – the so called Sofia congress held in 1934, and the latest one held in 2011 again in Sofia. The appearance of the idea of congresses of Byzantine studies is traced back to the early twentieth century; locations and participants in the congresses held over the years, as well as the issues discussed. As far as the time between the two dates mentioned above is concerned, the article thoroughly lists the basic achievements of the eminent world known byzantologists and special attention is paid to the place and role of the Bulgarian scholars, their participation and achievements during the congress sessions. Apart from this the article puts on record the publications, issued after the congresses; the resolutions taken; organs and organizing committees, who took care of the preparation of the events, and of the management of the world association of byzantologists between congresses.
