Summary/Abstract: The Russian Cultural and Educational Association Alexander Duchnovich presenteditself as a state-forming non-political organization, but it purposefully promotedthe Russian political direction symbolized by the demand for the exclusiveuse of the Russian literary language in education and public space. He denied theuniqueness of the Ukrainian nation, which he saw as a mere Belarusian branch ofthe Russian nation of a hundred million. He denounced Ukrainian politicians forcultural separatism and political irredentism, but did not rule out the possibilitythat in the future a strong, restored Russia would include the territory of SubcarpathianRussia in its annexation program. While representatives of the local Czechoslovakadministration were rather reticent about the activities of the association, the association, led by its ambitious secretary Stefan A. Fencik, enjoyed the behindthe-scenes support of prominent Russophile politicians in Prague (Václav Klofáč,Karel Kramář) and abroad.
