Summary/Abstract: The paper examines the substandard pronuncia on of certain words in the comedies bya popular Polish filmmaker, Stanisław Bareja. The empirical material was obtained usingthe audi ve method. The author claims that non-literary phone c realisa ons that appear inthe fi lm dialogues imitate: 1) colloquial mispronuncia ons; 2) dialectal pronuncia on (especiallytypical of the urban dialect of Warsaw); 3) hypercorrect pronuncia on; 4) speech defects andunfamiliarity with foreign words. Subsequently, he lists several important func ons of thephone c peculiari es. The fi lmmaker used them primarily to achieve humorous eff ects. However,the analysis has also revealed that they indicated: 1) the place of ac on; 2) the social affi lia onof the characters; 3) the intellectual level of the characters; 4) the ethnicity of the characters;5) the level of formality of the communica ve situa on.
