Summary/Abstract: The article attempts to present Irish Travellers, a minority group in Ireland characterized by a nomadic lifestyle. Whilst the origin of Travellers is still a matter for debate, there is a broad consensus that Travellers are distinct from the settled Irish population. They are especially distinct in regard to their shared values, in particular nomadism and the importance of extended families. Most of the Travellers’ life takes place within such families. The family members always “stick together” nowadays, living a more settled lifestyle. However, there are some Travellers who still are nomadic and they wish to maintain the right to keep such a way of life and the opportunities it brings.
