Summary/Abstract: This article explores the importance of reading and understanding the life experiences of bilingualUkrainian people in the context of language for a sociologically grounded analysis of social pro-cesses in their autobiographical accounts. In the article I review the historical and contemporarylinguistic transformations in Ukraine and their impact on the public debate about identity and thenation-building function of language in the context of the ongoing war. I analyse the phenomenonof surzhyk – Ukrainian-Russian mixed speech and cite the concept of language biography. Basedon this, I created a linguistic biography of Lesia, the narrator, who shared her story with me as partof the project Bieżeńczynie. Biographies of female war refugees from Ukraine in Poland.
