Summary/Abstract: The level of individual financial education refers to each person’s ability to make the right decision on how to put to use one’s own financial resources. The present study aims at evaluating the ways of public information, while providing the necessary assistance for the accurate assesment of the assumed risks when deciding to increase one’s indebtedness level. The most appropriate person to correctly assess one’s reimbursement capacity is the credit applicant himself, therefore helping individuals at making substantiated financial decisions represents a solution for maintaining a safe financial environment. At present, there is not enough information or analysis concerning the financial behaviour of the Romanian population on the microeconomic level, regarding their attitude towards saving, indebtedness or accumulation, although the impact of this behaviour on the general welfare is quite strong. The financial education of the population has not represented a priority in Romania so far, although in Western countries, including in the newest member states of the European Union, the monitoring authorities are highly focused on this component. The present study has emerged out of the necessity to evaluate the level of financial knowledge of the adult Romanian public. Its results will show to what extent the Romanian people are familiar with the characteristics of the financial and banking products and services on the market.
