Summary/Abstract: The last fifty years have witnessed an explosion of leisure travel from, within, across and out of the European states. The form and nature of this growth has been extremely varied as some regions have become mass consumers (UK, Germany and Scandinavia for example) whereas the Eastern European model has been greatly informed by the Communist and post-communist era social model. It is generally agreed that leisure travel should be promoted as an important contributor to individual wellbeing as well as social integration, and so different member states have adopted policies to support access to participation in leisure travel for excluded groups. This is often called ‘Social Tourism’ yet there is great variation in definition, meaning and application across the European Union.
