Summary/Abstract: The article addresses the issue of socio-political engagement of young adults in Poland. At the level of theory, it engages with the concepts of political participation and civic engagement and builds upon the state-of-the art in motivations for engagement research. The authors focus on young adults’ activist pathways in order to address the following questions: (1) under what circumstances does their involvement begin and develop; (2) what motivates them to get engaged, both in the initial and subsequent stages, and how do these motivations change over time? The article is based on an analysis of 28 interviews with young activists (18–24 years old) associated with at least one of the three areas of engagement: institutional/political (political youth groups, political parties, local government), socio-political (social movements and organisations with a nationwide impact) and socio-local (volunteer fire brigades, local community-based NGOs).
