Summary/Abstract: Katalin Grosschmid (1904–1986) started writing her diary at the age of 14, on 9 March 1918. In the first years she often recorded daily events, but then her entries became less frequent and she wrote her last entry in 1931, when she already was a married woman. The diary is a subjective genre, reflecting the writer's innermost thoughts and feelings, and thus also everyday events. In this case, we get an insight into everyday life in 1918 and 1919 through the experiences and thoughts of a teenage girl, a member of a now famous bourgeois family in Kassa/Košice (Dr. Géza Grosschmid, notary, lawyer, legal advisor and senator, Sándor Márai, writer, journalist and Géza Radványi, film director). She gives us a picture of the family's relationships, conveying their opinions and views, and describing the historical events that are important today in their prime reality.
