Summary/Abstract: The article lays down the theoretical foundations for the consideration and understanding of the art book as a unique artistic form in contemporary art. In accordance with world scientific developments, the art book is defined as a free visual work of the artist, which is conceived and realized through the specific expressive means of the book and is realized independently of the traditional structures and distribution network of official book publishing. A number of essential characteristics determine art publications not as a literary genre, but as a genre in visual art, which stems from innovative ideas from the end of the 19th century and revolutionary movements in the avant-garde in the 20th century. The text clarifies the historical genesis and formulates the conceptual and aesthetic-artistic features of the two main directions: art books, realized in a limited (limited) author's circulation, and conceptual art books, also called artist's art publications. The current trends in the dynamic development of contemporary artistic publications, which are defined by a variety of forms and innovative authorial plastic and pictorial approaches, are commented on.
