Summary/Abstract: Iustin Ștefan Frățiman, a representative of the national movement and the struggle for independence, Romanian language, and culture, clearly expressed his position on the problem of national unity through his publications, especially those from the “România Nouă” newspaper. In this newspaper, during the first four months of 1918, he published a series of articles concerning the fate of the Romanians from Transnistria, Siberia, Turkestan, Caucasus, and Crimea. He pleaded for the nationalisation of church and school; together with I. Buzdugan, he participated in the making of a programme for the reformation of the Transnistria school. He identified a lot of national historical monuments which were estranged and requested their return home. He contributed to the creation of the Bessarabian Scientific Society and the issuing of the Bulletin of the “B. P. Hasdeu” Historical-Literary Society from Chișinău; he edited the first issues of this journal. He pleaded for the collecting of ethnographic, folkloric, and documentary materials and for storing them in a national history museum. Iustin Frățiman – an active participant in the movement of national revival in Bessarabia. A man of encyclopaedical culture, a graduate of three faculties – theology (Kazan), archaeology, philology (Petersburg), a passionate researcher, and a remarkable publicist; he dedicated his entire life to the welfare of the nation. For his nationalistic activity, he was persecuted and exiled to Siberia.
