Summary/Abstract: The author addresses some aspects of the life and work of the university professor and tsarist minister Lev Aristidovici Casso (1865-1914) about whom many articles have been written, but less in terms of appreciation of the historiographical work in the context of research on the Eastern Question. The work of L.A. Casso “Россия на Дунае и образование Бессарабской области” („Russia on the Danube and the formation of the Bessarabian region”, Moscow, 1913; later edited in Romanian translation: “Russia and the Danube Basin”), related to the reopening of the Eastern Question at the beginning of the 19th century. The author relied on published and unpublished documents, on a number of publications in Russian and foreign journals, demonstrating a good knowledge of modern languages. He was a polyglot, fluent in many classical and modern languages. Exponent of an exceptional culture, he wrote his works in Russian and German, he also knew Romanian, French, Italian and English. Diplomatic correspondence and memoirs of Napoleon I, Alexander I, Ch. Talleyrand, P.V. Tchitcheagov, K. Nesselrode, A. Czartoryski, J. de Maistre, F.P. Fonton et al. they allowed the author to discern and present the vast picture of the diplomatic duels of the European courts - even if there is a gap, from the point of view of sources, that of the lack of Ottoman documents. He was the bearer of the most progressive ideas in legal science, but at the same time he became the symbol of a reactionary politician. Casso remains one of the most controversial figures to ever lead the Ministry of Public Education of the Russian Empire (during the cabinets of P.A. Stolypin, V. N. Kokovtsov and I. L. Goremykin). Casso was a member of the Conservative ministers of the right wing of the government and held the post of minister until his death on November 26 (December 9, 1914).
