Summary/Abstract: The 1946–1949 Chinese Civil War was long considered a war in which communistpeasant guerillas defeated a US-backed army. From the 1980s, it became increasingly clearthat Mao Zedong’s forces were a professional military body equipped by the Soviet Union.
