Summary/Abstract: The paper explores the use of regional dialects in manga, focusing on the Gotō dialect featured in Barakamon, a slice-of-life manga by Yoshino Satsuki. Set in the Gotō Islands of Nagasaki Prefecture, this Japanese comic book authentically depicts rural life and culture through the local dialect, which is characterized by its unique vocabulary and phonetic features. The article draws a parallel between the Gotō dialect and the Moldavian dialect, emphasizing how both are colloquial, friendly, and regionally distinct from their standard languages. This comparison illustrates how the dialect’s familiar and informal nature adds depth and authenticity to the characters’ interactions in Barakamon. Additionally, the article includes a pragmalinguistic analysis of selected dialogues from the manga, highlighting how the Gotō dialect’s nuances are preserved and adapted in Romanian translations. By using Moldavian dialect as an equivalent, the translations maintain the original tone and cultural context, ensuring that the emotional and social dynamics of the characters are effectively conveyed to Romanian readers. Overall, the use of the Gotō dialect in Barakamon enriches the narrative, providing a deeper cultural immersion and enhancing the reading experience with its vibrant linguistic authenticity.
