Summary/Abstract: Karl Wilhelm von Willisen is a lesser-known Prussian military theoretician from the 19th century who, among other things, was concerned with the role of fortifications in war. This article deals with the use of fortifications in the defence of Prussia’s eastern border, the source material for which is provided by three texts written by Willisen between 1832–1868. In these papers, the importance of the fortresses in Toruń, Wrocław, Królewiec, Głogów and Poznań is emphasised. Willisen also considered the construction of the Poznań fortress to be a mistake, as was the failure to rebuild the fortress in Wrocław.
