Summary/Abstract: During the time of King Edward the Confessor (1004–1066), relations between the Anglo-Saxon world and Byzantium became more intense. During the reign of the Byzantine emperor Alexius I Comnenus (1081–1118), there was a reorganization of the Varangian Guard, in which, in addition to the Danes, the Anglo-Saxons were given the leading position. The Anglo-Saxon factor in Byzantium gained importance due to the Anglo-Saxon migrations that followed the Battle of Hastings in 1066 and the Norman Conquest. Some of the sources mention that the Anglo-Saxons got land in Byzantium, where they built settlements and cities with the names of those from the old homeland, as well as that they called the obtained lands New England, and even that they kept the Latin priesthood. In addition to the migration of Anglo-Saxon exiles to Byzantium, this paper also deals with the ecclesiastical jurisdiction among the settlers. Possible settlement areas and competent Church jurisdictions for the English in Byzantium are the eparchies of Chersones and Bithynia, as well as Constantinople and its immediate surroundings.
