Summary/Abstract: This paper focuses on some aspects that must be taken into consideration when approaching technical discourse. It presents an account of how to think about the functions of language in general and how these can be applied in use of specialised forms of discourse, with a focus on the discourse of engineering. The paper attempts to create a functional perspective towards a definition of the discourse of science and engineering.
